SAVE MYANMAR PROTEST
LONDON
London, April 3rd 2021 | Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of Parliament to protest against the current military coup in Myanmar, which began on February 1st 2021 when the military took control.
The crowd held a silence before marching to Downing Street, and then to St James Park. Protesters held placards that read "Don't let them shoot our friends" and held three fingers in the air as a sign of resilience.
The country was previously ruled by armed forces from 1962 until 2011. The military has now not only taken charge once again but also declared a year-long state of emergency and detained Elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, along with members of her National League for Democracy party (NLD).
Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and in 2015 claimed a victory for the National League for Democracy in Myanmar's first openly contested election since 1996.
Protesters have taken to the streets in Myanmar despite military imposed restrictions, security forces have responded with water cannons, rubber bullets and live ammunition leading to the deadliest day so far, March 27th, in which more than 100 people were killed.
