PARIS, 01 May 2022 - Thousands of protesters gather in Paris for this year's International Workers Day, also known as fête du Travail, or Labour Day.
Originally a day to celebrate labourers and the working class, this years demonstration saw protesters angry at the country’s recent presidential elections which had Emmanuel Macron voted back into office, and in particular his plans to raise the retirement age to 65.
Heavy clashes erupted as anti-capitalists joined the march from Place de la Republique and engaged in violent street battles with police that lasted hours.
Police in riot gear fired tear gas as shops and banks were smashed and large fires were lit. 45 arrests were made and eight police officers were left injured.
